What Size Of RV Tire Cover Do I Need?

Many RV tire cover manufacturers have a size guide in the product description.

But if you don’t feel like looking for your specific tire or you can’t find it on the list, you can always measure the total length of your RV tire yourself.

Measuring yourself is probably the most accurate way to get the right size of RV tire cover. If your tires are in between sizes, get the larger size to make sure the covers will fit easily.

Just for reference, my travel trailer had pretty standard ST tires (special trailer) that were 28 inches in total diameter.

When we switched to a Class C motorhome that had LT tires (light truck) the total diameter was 29 inches. Luckily, the RV tire covers we got for the trailer work on the motorhome.

Since the different RVs and trucks always have different sizes of tires, I will not make a list or estimate. It’s best to look up your specific tire or measure yourself.

My Choice For Best RV Tire Cover

There are three main styles of RV tire covers in this review, and each is better for different campers.

The first three are the best for those who travel a lot and need an RV tire cover that is going to be fast to set up and put away.

The TCP Global RV Tire Covers are fantastic for long-stay RVers, but they don’t offer a ton of wind security.

The tire covers that are a good middle ground that offer the best of both worlds are the Camco RV Tire Protectors.

That’s why they are my choice for the best overall RV tire covers.

The Camcos are thicker than the travel ones but not so thick that they are hard to fold up and put away.

The wind strap has to be installed every time you put them on, but the design makes getting the strap across the back of the tire a little easier than most.

Overall, they are a good choice for every kind of camper.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Tire Covers

Are RV tire covers worth it?

Yes, RV tire covers are worth it.

RV tires that are in good shape are a huge part of safety when traveling to your next campsite.

Since most people don’t want to buy new RV tires every season, a good way to keep your tires in excellent condition is to put covers on them.

The number one thing that breaks down the materials tires are made of is UV rays from the sun.

Most tire covers stop all UV rays, and if you get a light color like white, they will also keep your tires cooler as the sun shines on them.

Keeping the sun off your RV tires will stop them from cracking and drying out, which creates unsafe driving and towing conditions.

Not to mention that tire covers will also keep your tires cleaner longer and protect them from wear from windblown sand.

Do RV tire covers need to have wind straps?

My RV tire covers have a style of wind straps that are elastic straps with hooks on the ends. You are supposed to reach around the tires and connect the hooks together in the center for a super windproof connection.

That’s great in concept, but it’s not easy to wrap my arms around a 29-inch RV tire. And the back of the RV has dual tires, which means there’s a very tiny gap that’s hard to snake the strap through.

Because my RV tire covers also have a built-in elastic that goes along almost the entire back panel, and the covers fit the tires perfectly, it’s been enough to just slip the covers over the camper tires.

There have been a few times when the wind has gotten really strong when camping out in the desert, and I have connected the hooks to the frame of the RV, but that has only been a few times in years of full-time camping.

If the covers have full length built in elastics and the fit is nice and snug over the tire, you don’t need to have a wind strap, or you don’t need to spend the time to hook it to something.

Do RV spare tire covers work?

Rear-mounted RV spare tires are normally exposed to the sun for the longest amount of time compared to other tires.

They are often sitting up higher as well and even more exposed to the elements.

The sun is the main enemy to rubber in tires, and you want to minimize the sun exposure as much as possible so you know it will be in safe working condition when you need it.

RV spare tire covers normally cover not only the front and sides of a spare tire, they also cover the back.

They normally block 100% of damaging UV rays, and they are often waterproof, so they help stop any rust from water collecting around the rim.

Even if you don’t camp a lot, getting an RV spare tire cover is one of the easiest upgrades you can add to your camper to make it last longer.
