Best RV Water Filter Systems & Cartridges Reviewed 2024

Is an RV Water Filter Necessary?

Clean water. The biggest necessity for us humans. Chocolate comes a close second for me.

Anything we put in our bodies should be clean and free from harmful bacteria, chlorine, contaminants, sediment, and particulates.

Not only for our health, but for taste as well.

Unfortunately, not all water sources provide clean water, especially for RVers.

Travelers and RVers often look for potable water that’s safe to drink, but that doesn’t mean it’s always clean and free of sand that can clog up an RV water pump.

Putting an RV water filter between the water source and fresh water tank will help reduce and remove things that make water unhealthy, taste bad, and ruins water pumps.

The RV water filter cartridge sits in one or more canisters, depending on the kind you are using.

Water flows through the cartridge and gets filtered.

Best RV Water Filter Systems Reviews & Info

1. Camco TastePURE RV Water Filter with Flexible Hose Protector

Camco TastePURE RV Water Filter - New Advanced 6-Step Patent-Protected...

Check Price at Amazon

The Camco TastePURE is a great RV water filter for people that occasionally camp in the summer or don’t want a permanent inline solution installed in the RV.

It can be screwed on at the water source before the water hits your hose, to clean the water before it reaches any of your gear and tanks.

Screw it onto the water hydrant or tap itself, or use the included flexible hose protector to put less strain on the filter and your hose.

The connectors on the water filter itself are plastic, but the flexible hose protector has a brass fitting.

An arrow on the water filter will help you install the filter the right way. It’s a minor detail, but a much appreciated one.

So what will the TastePURE RV water filter do for you?

It will reduce the number of heavy metals, chemicals, chlorine, bacterial contaminants, and pesticides in the water.

It’s made in the USA and CSA certified, meaning that it has been tested to meet standards for safety and performance.

See Also: Best RV Sewer Hose Kits Reviewed & Rated

The water filter used in the TastePURE is a 100-micron sediment filter. It’s pretty weak compared to the alternatives below.

100 microns is high for an RV water filter and means that bigger particles can go through.

This is the biggest reason it’s not one of our top picks in this review.

Camco recommends changing the filter cartridge every 500 gallons.

Whether or not you should follow that to 100 percent depends on what water you put through the filter.

Dirtier water will make it dirtier faster than clean water — more about this in the FAQ at the bottom.

So is the Camco TastePURE RV Water Filter with Flexible Hose Protector the best water filter for your RV?

If you know that the water you’ll put through it is clean, then it could be acceptable.

PROS

  • Portable
  • Easy Install
  • Includes Flexible Hose Protector
  • CSA Certified
  • Made In The USA

CONS

  • Only 100 Micron Sediment Filter
  • Only One Filtration Stage
  • Filter Cartridge Not Replaceable

2. Camco EVO Premium RV/Marine Water Filter

Camco Evo Camper/RV Water Filter | Features Granulated Activated...

Check Price at Amazon

A step up from the Camco TastePURE is the EVO Premium, also made by Camco.

The filter housing can be connected directly to the hose outside your camper or mounted inside for a more permanent inline water filter solution.

There is a small extension hose is included which has a brass fitting for durability. The fittings on the filter canister itself are plastic.

Camco EVO Premium will not only reduce the number of heavy metals, chemicals, chlorine, bacterial contaminants, and pesticides in the water, but also fungus and cadmium.

It comes with a filter cartridge that has a 5-micron rating, which is much better than what we saw on the Camco TastePURE. It’s also a CSA certified product.

See Also: How To Find Nearby RV Dump Stations & Fresh Water Fill-Up

To change the cartridge, you unscrew the water filter canister with the included tool.

Camco recommends replacing it every 500 gallons, but as I previously mentioned, it depends on how dirty the water going through the RV water filter is.

Since it’s so easy to open it up, you should check it regularly and replace the EVO Premium Filter (click to view on Amazon) when it looks dirty.

While the Camco EVO Premium RV/Marine Water Filter is a good choice with a 5-micron filter, it’s still a single-stage filter that won’t remove the smaller particles.

If you know that the water you’re putting through it is clean, it will do the job for the occasional camper.

I don’t recommend this for full-time RVers or people that fill up at campgrounds.

Most RVers should use at least a two-stage filter where the second filter is at least rated at 1 micron.

PROS

  • Portable
  • Easy Install
  • Replaceable Filter Cartridge
  • CSA Certified
  • Easy Open Tool Included
  • Comes With Extension Hose

CONS

  • Only One Filtration Stage

3. Beech Lane External Dual RV Water Filter System

Beech Lane External RV Dual Water Filter System, Leak-Free Brass...

Check Price at Amazon

Beech Lane makes a two-stage RV water filter system that can be permanently mounted inside or outside an RV depending on how it will be used.

Using it as an RV inline water filter setup is a good way to go because it’s one less thing you’ll have to carry around and deal with.

It can also be used like the basic single stage RV water filters in this review that sit outside the RV.

This is the RV water filter we use for our travel trailer and we don’t have it set up inline.

Instead, we store it in the bed of our truck and use it between two hoses whenever we are connected to city water or just filling up the fresh water tank.

It has a mounting bracket with two holes you can use to install it inside a storage compartment. Some people even mount it to the back of their campers next to the bumper.

It’s a versatile RV water filter with lots of mounting and storage options, which makes it great for all kinds of campers.

See Also: Best RV Shower Heads That Increase Water Pressure

The filter cartridges sit in two canisters that screw onto the top piece that has the mounting bracket and hose connections.

The hose connectors are made with lead-free brass that are not more reliable and last longer than plastic.

They also prevent leaks, which is important when using the Beech Lane as an inline RV water filter.

It’s a dual RV water filtration system with one filter rated at 5 microns and the other at 0.5 microns to make sure even the smaller particles get caught.

With a two-stage water filter, it’s important to follow the intake and outtake arrows.

You want the first cartridge with a higher micron rating to take care of big particles like sand and dirt, then the second one to deal with smaller stuff, like chlorine.

To understand micron better, check out the FAQ at the bottom where we answer a question about this.

The filters used are standard 2.5 by 10-inch and can be replaced with these (click to view on Amazon).

Beech Lane advertises a 1900 gallon lifetime for its filters, so you won’t have to change them very often depending on how much you camp.

Even if you’re a summer camper, I recommend changing them at least every year. They can get moldy and filled with mildew if not used regularly.

Included with the Beech Lane filter is an easy open tool you can use to unscrew the canisters. We use it to empty and dry out the canisters between use.

The mounting bracket is a permanent part of the RV water filter system.

The Beech Lane External RV Dual Water Filter System has a lot of fantastic features for RVs.

You can use it as an RV inline water filter or an exterior one for filling up the fresh water tank.

The fittings are of high quality and it doesn’t leak even when put under pressure.

We’ve used it between two hoses when connected to city water in an RV park and have had no issues with leaking.

Because of the dual filters, it’s a fantastic choice for the full-time traveler that fills the fresh water tank from a lot of different potable water sources.

PROS

  • Two-Stage Filtration System
  • Brass Fittings
  • 5 & 0.5 Micron Rated Filters
  • Doesn’t Leak Under Pressure
  • Easy Open Tool Included
  • Easy Install
  • Can Be Used As Inline Or Exterior RV Water Filter
  • Replaceable Filter Cartridges

CONS

  • No Mounting Hardware Included (Screws & Bolts)

4. Camco Hydro Life Dual RV Water Filtration System

Camco Hydro Life Premium Dual Water Filtration System | Filters...

Check Price at Amazon

Another RV water filter by Camco is the Hydro Life.

It’s a two-stage filtration system for campers, and one of the most effective options made by Camco.

The company that originally made this system was called Hydro Life but were in 2014 acquired by Camco Manufacturing.

The Hydro Life was originally made for plants and gardens, but it works great as an RV water filtration system, which is why Camco now sells it for RV use.

It uses two filters that are put in the canisters to remove chlorine, chloramines, salts, heavy metals, sulfur, sediment, rust flakes, and other contaminants.

The first filter is a 25-micron filter and the second one is a 5-micron KDF filter.

What the KDF filter is especially good for is trapping heavy metals and chloramines.

There is an easy open tool is included for removing the canisters when they need to be cleaned or to replace the filters.

The mounting bracket is part of the top unit that connects the two filter canisters and houses the hose connections.

The connections are made of brass and leak free even when put under pressure.

This is an important feature if you are planning on using the Camco as an RV inline water filter or having it between hoses when connected to city water at a campground or RV park.

Camco advertises that its filters only need to be changed every 8000 gallons, which puts it at the top of the review for filter life.

The Camco Hydro Life Dual RV Water Filtration System is an excellent choice to install on your RV or camper to filter your water before it enters the fresh water tank or inline.

Even though it’s made for gardens and plants, it will clean the water and take care of a lot of particles you don’t want in your body.

With durable construction, a two-stage water filtration system, and brass fittings, it’s the top Camco option in this review.

PROS

  • Two-Stage Filtration System
  • Brass Fittings
  • 25 & KDF-85 5 Micron Filters
  • Doesn’t Leak Under Pressure
  • Easy Open Tool Included
  • Easy Install
  • Can Be Used As Inline Or Exterior RV Water Filter
  • Replaceable Filter Cartridges

CONS

  • Second Filter Cartridge Could Be Smaller For Better Filtration

5. RV Water Filter Store Portable RV Water Filter System

RV Water Filter Store Essential System + Iron and Heavy Metals Water...

Check Price at Amazon

Most campers don’t use the water that comes out of the RV’s fresh water tank for regular drinking.

It often tastes bad and even if you’ve used a high quality RV water filter to fill the tank, you never really know what’s going on inside.

It can be especially risky if you’ve bought your camper used. I’ve seen RVers filling up their freshwater tank from non-potable water sources a few times.

That’s why it’s important to give your RV fresh water tank and system a good yearly cleaning.

You can read about how to do that in this article here.

I’m mentioning this now because there are heavy duty 3 set water filters like the RV Water Filter Store RV water filter system that can make the water from the RV fresh water tank clean, tasteless, and drinkable.

The specific version I’ve linked to above is made for connecting to a camper water system directly after the RV water pump.

You connect after the pump because they made to have water pushing through, not pulled.

If you are worried about sediment getting into your RV water pump, you can install a strainer (click to view on Amazon) to help keep it safe.

Most RV water pumps come with this kind of strainer pre-installed. Chances are you already have one.

Here’s how this specific RV water filter works.

There are 3 canisters, each has a different water filter.

The first is a 1 micron sediment filter for the big stuff, followed by a 0.5 micron carbon block filter that will remove any Chlorine, VOCs, pesticides, tastes, odors, and cysts.

The 3rd and final filter uses a special resin that will remove any iron, lead, and other heavy metals that are common in potable water sources.

It’s one of the most advanced RV water filtration systems on the market today, and the most thorough in this review.

If you want to drink water directly from the tap in your camper, I recommend a 3 step inline RV water filter like this one.

Even though the water has to travel through a lot of filters, the GPM (gallons per minute) is still 3-4, which is the standard in RVs.

The metal trap filter is rated to work on up to 6,000 gallons of water.

The manufacturer recommends changing out the other filters every 6 months.

For easy filter changing, there is a canister wrench included with purchase and a mounting bracket.

This RV water filter system is NSF certified and made in the USA.

This specific version comes with brass 1/2 inch NPT fittings that are standard to most campers and boats for easy inline installation.

If you want to use this RV water filter system on the outside of your RV to fill up the fresh water tank, you can get this version (click to view on Amazon) that comes with brass hose fittings instead.

If you mostly camp in RV parks and campgrounds with water connections, get this .

It’s capable of 4-5 GFM and has a longer filter life. Note this version comes with the hose fittings and not the inline NPT fitting.

The RV Water Filter Store Portable RV Water Filter System is one of the best 3 stage water filter systems you can get for RV use.

It will make the water coming out of your RV fresh water tank fresh and more enjoyable to drink.

One thing I have to point out is even though RV water filter systems like these are very thorough and can get rid of a lot of bad stuff.

I don’t recommend using water that isn’t from a potable/drinkable water source.

PROS

  • Three-Stage Filtration System
  • Brass Fittings
  • 1 & 0.5 Micron Filters
  • Iron & Heavy Metals Filter
  • Doesn’t Leak Under Pressure
  • Easy Open Tool Included
  • Easy Install
  • Can Be Used As Inline Or Exterior RV Water Filter
  • Replaceable Filter Cartridges
  • Made In The USA

CONS

  • Large

6. Clearsource Premium RV Water Filter System

Clearsource Premier RV Water Filter System - Protects Against...

Check Price at Amazon

For the most heavy-duty RV water filtration system, Clearsource wins.

This is a two-stage system with two robust canisters, a built-in stand that protects both from above, below, and behind, and with stainless steel fittings.

In the first canister, there is a 5-micron sediment filter to remove bigger particles like dust and sand.

The second canister holds a 0.5-micron carbon block filter to remove smaller particles and bad flavor.

Both canisters are oversized and made of thick plastic to hold up against the weather and dust.

The metal chassis can be mounted outside your RV and will protect the canisters from the weather.

Of course, you don’t have to do a permanent installation and can take it out when it’s time to fill the fresh water tank.

The stand makes it easy to put the water filter system on the ground to protect the canisters while you hook up and fill your hoses.

See Also: RV Condensation And 14 Ways To Prevent Mold In Your Trailer

A tool is included to unscrew the canisters when it’s time to change the filters.

Clearsource recommends changing the filters (click to view on Amazon) every 2000 gallons.

Depending on how dirty the water is that you put through it, you might have to do it more or less often.

The Clearsource Premium RV Water Filter System is the best RV water filtration system available today.

It uses two filters that are rated at 5 and 0.5 microns. That is small enough to take care of lots of particles we don’t want in our bodies.

There’s also a stand that lets you put the system on the ground or even do a permanent inline installation on your RV.

It’s well built and protects your canisters from the elements.

Overall, this is one of the best choices for full-time RVer who fill up their fresh water tank all over the country .

When using a thorough RV water filter like this, you’ll be drinking, cooking, and showering with clean water.

PROS

  • Two-Stage Filtration System
  • Heavy Duty Stand/Mounting Bracket
  • Stainless Steel Fittings
  • Doesn’t Leak Under Pressure
  • Easy Open Tool Included
  • Easy Install
  • Can Be Used As Inline Or Exterior RV Water Filter

Conclusion & My RV Water Filter Recommendations

Any clean RV water filter is better than no filter at all.

Filtering out big and small particles will not only bring a peace of mind, but be better for your body in the long term.

The biggest difference between the RV water filters in this review is how fine the filters are and how many of them are being used.

See Also: What Do I Need To Use Hookups At An RV Park Or Campground?

If your RV water filter won’t get rid of the smaller particles, it might be useless in most places.

Take that into consideration when choosing a product. If you want to know more about what micron rating means, look at the FAQ below.

Now, here are my recommendations for the best water filtration systems for RV use.

Camco Hydro Life Premium Dual Water Filtration System | Filters...

Best Camco RV Water Filter – Camco Hydro Life Dual RV Water Filtration System

Camco has three RV water filters in this review, but the only one I recommend for most campers is the Hydro Life with two filters rated at 25 and 5 microns.

It’s a good RV filtration system that will take care of most particles and can easily be installed permanently on your RV or be portable.

If you know a water source is relatively clean, go for the Hydro Life.

RV Water Filter Store Essential System + Iron and Heavy Metals Water...

Best RV Inline Water Filter – RV Water Filter Store Portable RV Water Filter System

RV inline water filters are the most difficult to install but the easiest to use regularly.

If you mostly camp in places with water hookups, and you rarely fill the fresh water tank, a high quality inline RV water filter like the RV Water Filter Store 3 filter setup is one of the best choices out there.

Water in campgrounds and RV Parks often tastes a little funky and can be full of heavy metals.

This 3 step RV water filter takes away all of those things, which means you can drink right from the tap and you won’t have to worry about finding and storing drinking water.

It’s even great for using as a freshwater tank fill up filter.

It’s just a little bulky, and it might be a bit more of a hassle to pull out of storage whenever you fill up the RV fresh water tank.

That’s why I recommend it for inline use.

Clearsource Premier RV Water Filter System - Protects Against...

Best Overall – Clearsource Premium RV Water Filter System

Clearsource Premium RV filtration system is popular with campers for a couple of reasons. It works great, is very portable, and easy to mount.

The 5 and 0.5 micron rated filters take care of most dirt and particles,.

The frame is the best out of all the RV water filters in this review, and is the easiest one to put on the ground while filling up with water.

It’s also heavy duty enough to install on the bumper of your RV, so you don’t have to carry the 17 lbs system around or give up valuable inner storage space.

All in all, it’s the most portable and best RV water filtration system available on the market today that will make sure you’re consuming clean water no matter where you are.

Safe drinking water sign at RV dump station
You should always use an RV water filter even when getting water from a potable or safe drinking water hydrant.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Water Filters

Why should I filter the water going into my RV fresh water tank?

To make sure the water you drink, cook with, and shower in is clean and free from dirt, bacteria, heavy metals, etc.

Drinking water with lots of particles might not affect you in the short term, but can damage your health.

To read more about what regulations are put on drinking water in the USA check out this article.

Sandy and gritty water is also terrible for your RV water pump.

That’s why they normally have a small filter on them to keep out any large objects from entering.

Running dirty water through an RV pump will damage it over time, so you want to be careful about what goes into the fresh water tank for that reason as well.

What does a micron rating mean?

A micron is a unit in the metric system. One micron equals a millionth of a meter.

For example, a piece of hair is about 50 microns in thickness.

On RV water filters, the first stage is always bigger in microns to catch bigger pieces of dirt and particles.

What do the stages mean in an RV water filter?

It’s about how many filters the water will go through.

One stage systems have only one canister and one filter.

Two-stage systems have two canisters and filters, and so on.

How often should I change the water filter for my camper?

In most cases, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific product.

Sometimes filters don’t need to be changed as often though, or more frequently.

It depends on how clean the water is that you’ve been putting through the system.

If you have clean tap water at your house and use that to fill up your fresh water tank with, you might only have to change it once a year.

If you travel all over the country, or places that don’t have clean water, you might have to change the filter before it has been three months or whatever the product manual states.

A dirty filter looks dirty. If you think it’s time to change after a certain amount of time, look at the filter to see how dirty it is.

How do I know if the water in my RV’s tank is clean?

There are drinking water tests (click to view on Amazon) available for purchase that lets you test the water.

It’s not the product used to test drinking water every day.

But it’s a smart idea to check the water in your camper’s fresh water tank at least once a year to make sure the water is clean and safe to drink.

What are other ways to clean RV water and remove bad taste/odor?

An easy way to go is by using a system cleaner like the Camco 40207 TastePURE Spring Fresh Water System Cleaner and Deodorizer (click to view on Amaz0n).

One gallon can clean up to a 100-gallon tank.

I recommend cleaning your RV water tank yearly if you drink the water in your fresh water tank.

See Also: How To Clean/Sanitize RV Water System And Holding Tanks

How to store an RV water filter?

If you don’t have your camper water filter installed in or on your RV, you’ll need to find a clean place to store it.

We use a plastic tub with holes in the lid and keep it in the front storage of our travel trailer.

Before putting it away, we always open up the canisters to let out any excess water.

The holes in the tub’s lid are to let air in and moisture out so the RV water filter can continue to dry and not get moldy.

We also never let them sit long term.

If you will not be using your RV water filter for a few months because of winter or travel, replace the filters when you start camping again.

How long does a Camco RV marine water Tastepure filter last?

The Camco RV Tastepure filter can filter up to 500 gallons of water. If you only camp summer weekends, one should get you through the season.

If you full-time RV you will probably have to get a new one every couple of months.

The filter in the Camco Tastepure is not replaceable.

If you full-time RV or camp a ton, I recommend getting an RV water filtration system that has a replaceable filter.

How many gallons per minute do I need for an RV water filter?

Most campers, including RVs, travel trailers and 5th-wheels, use water pumps that can output around 3-5 gallons per minute.

Most RV inline water filters are made to work with these kinds of pumps and any of the ones in this review will work just fine.

If you are using a portable RV water filter that connects to a hydrant to fill up the fresh water tank, you don’t have to worry as much about the gallons per minute.

But getting a higher output RV water filter will help you fill up the fresh water tank faster.

How to stop water leaking from hose RV water filter.

Mostly when an RV water filter is leaking, it’s because one of the rubber gaskets or seals is missing or sitting crooked.

If your RV water filter is leaking, open the connection the water is coming from and check the seal.

It’s not uncommon for them to fall out during travel. It’s a good idea to keep a few extras on hand just in case.

How to tell if your RV has a water filter?

Inline RV water filters are almost always mounted next to the RV water pump.

The easiest way to find out if your RV has one or not is to look next to the water pump.

How to filter water as you fill your RV tank.

To filter water before it gets to your RV’s fresh water tank, you need an RV water filter, like any of the ones in this review, that has a hose connection.

To use, simply hook the filter to the water source using either a drinking water approved hose or a short connector hose.

Then hook another hose to the outlet side of the water filter and fill the tank with that.

How often do you change an RV water filter?

Camper water filters have a life measured in gallons.

But most RVers change them every 6 months or after the summer camping season.
