A Rugged 5G Phone With A Huge Battery
Today, I’ll be reviewing something new: a smartphone specifically designed for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. We chose to test this phone because of its unique features tailored to adventurous users.
Many phones today are waterproof, but they’re prone to scratches and often lack batteries powerful enough to last beyond a day.
The phone I’m holding is designed to address both of those issues.
This is the Oukitel WP35.
On first glance, it might not stick out in the smartphone jungle. But when you take a look at the specifications you’ll see that it has a 11,000mAh battery.
If you’re not a tech enthusiast, that might not sound impressive. But let’s compare it to some of the most popular phones on the market to see why it’s significant. The new iPhone 16 has a 3,561mAh battery, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 features a 4,000mAh battery.
There is more to it than the large battery, so let’s get right into it.
Built Tough for the Outdoors
Oukitel claims the WP35 offers ‘military-grade drop resistance.’ While it’s unclear how durable that truly is, the phone does come with IP68 and IP69K waterproof ratings, ensuring strong protection against water and dust.
The screen is made with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, providing scratch resistance.
I’ve done a couple of drop tests onto hard rock (yes, it was nerve-wracking), and the phone held up well. The included case got slightly scuffed at the corners, but the screen remained intact.
The USB-C charging port is protected by a cover to keep water and debris out.
It comes with a plastic case and a pre-installed screen protector, enhancing its durability and ruggedness.
Battery Life That Won’t Let You Down
Oukitel claims a 60-day standby battery life, and I believe it. Unlike my regular phone, this one barely loses any charge when idle.
During two weeks of testing with heavy use, I’ve only needed to charge it twice. The massive battery is impressive, though it does add to the phone’s thickness. At 14.9mm, it’s the slimmest phone with an 11,000mAh battery, making the trade-off worth it for extended use.
Ready for Any Adventure
We know the phone is rugged with excellent battery life, but what else does it offer?
It features a 6.6-inch display with a 1080×2408 resolution (60Hz), delivering a sharp 400 PPI pixel density. This results in a crisp and clear screen, perfect for media consumption and everyday use.
The screen remains clear even under direct sunlight, making outdoor gaming and media viewing easy. It offers up to 450 nits of brightness.
The phone also features 5G connectivity, Bluetooth 5.2, Android 14, NFC, a fingerprint sensor, a compass, WiFi AC, a SIM card slot, and GPS.
Performance: Does It Get the Job Done?
The WP35 features a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ 2.2 GHz octa-core CPU, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable via an SD card. It handles popular Android games like Call of Duty Mobile smoothly, and 1080p video playback is seamless.
I was able to run Diablo Immortal on low settings with medium resolution without issues.
The only downside I’ve noticed is the speaker quality—it’s subpar. It’s fine for YouTube videos, but the sound feels too thin for games and movies, which can be distracting. I recommend using a Bluetooth speaker or wireless earbuds for a better experience. Since it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, wired headphones aren’t an option.
Camera: Snap Your Adventures
There are three cameras on the back of the WP35 and one on the front.
I’ll list the camera specifications below, but first, let’s take a look at some of the photos I’ve captured with this phone.
Since our website compresses photos to save space, I recommend viewing the full, unedited images on Google Drive. Click here to access the folder.
The front camera features a Sony IMX616 sensor, capturing 32MP photos and recording video at 1080p@30fps.
The rear camera is 64MP with a Sony IMX682 sensor, offering modes like HDR, night view, panorama, portrait, monochrome depth, and beauty. It supports 2K video recording at 30fps.
There is also a night vision and a macro camera. The night vision camera is pretty neat, and uses a Hynix HI846 8MP sensor. The Macro camera is a BYD BF2257CS sensor that shoots pictures at 2MP.
Flash can be used with both the main and the macro camera, while the night vision uses an infrared fill light.
Review – My Honest Thoughts
The Oukitel WP35 has made a solid impression on me. At its current price of $339.99, it’s reasonably affordable. However, its value depends on what you’re looking for in a phone and how much you prioritize its rugged features.
You’ll get a phone with outstanding battery life and a vibrant display. I could easily see myself using this as my daily driver because it performs well and the battery lasts impressively long.
I also appreciate that it comes with a case and screen protector, so it’s ready to use right out of the box. Plus, it includes a wall charger and USB-C cable.
Games and videos look fantastic on the large display, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to see the screen outdoors, even in bright sunlight.
The built-in speaker is the biggest letdown, and the camera struggles in low-light conditions. However, I can’t compare it to other phones in the same price range.
The camera takes decent photos for sharing on social media or with friends, but it’s not ideal if high-quality photography is your priority. I’m likely more critical since I usually shoot with a mirrorless camera, so take my opinion lightly and judge for yourself by checking out the sample photos I shared above.
