Best Small RV Dehumidifiers Reviews & Ratings 2020

Can a Small Dehumidifier Prevent Mold in an RV?

Not many people think about mold growing in their RV but it happens all the time and can be a big problem, especially if you live full time in it. I’ve heard many stories and seen videos of people who find mold in their RV or travel trailer and have to tear out walls, ceilings, and even subfloors. Don’t let the mold monster get you too. There are a few ways to prevent mold in a small space like an RV or travel trailer but one of the best ways is with a small dehumidifier.

You don’t need anything like what you would find in someone’s basement because RVs and travel trailers just aren’t as big and you can also use the fans to aid the dehumidifier in removing moisture. We use a weather station inside our travel trailer to monitor the humidity inside. When it gets over 50% we bring out our small RV dehumidifier and let it run until the humidity decreases. It’s especially useful after it’s rained and it’s cloudy outside.

Here are my reviews and ratings of some of the most powerful small dehumidifiers for RVs on the market today, including the one I use myself.

Small RV Dehumidifier Reviews, Ratings & Info

HomeLabs Small Space Dehumidifier

hOmeLabs Small Space Dehumidifier with Auto Shut Off - Quietly Extracts Moisture to Reduce Odor and Conditions That Can Lead to Allergies from Mold and Mildew - Compact and Portable

Check Price at Amazon

The Homelabs small space dehumidifier is the smallest on this list and uses the least amount of energy. This makes it the perfect option for small trailers, vans, and vehicles with limited power resources. You may not think having a small dehumidifier in a van is necessary but mattresses can mold very easily in high humidity and a small unit like this one can make all the difference.

Some of the main features include a 16 oz water tank. When full the Homelab dehumidifier will automatically shut off and illuminate an LED light. It uses only 22.5 watts of power when running and can draw up to 9 oz of water from the air a day.

It’s very quiet and rated to remove moisture in areas up to 150 square feet. If you have a large closet in your RV this is an excellent option for keeping your clothes moisture free. It uses thermoelectric cooling (Peltier) to remove water and there is no compressor, that helps keep it quiet. The only noise you hear is from the fan.

The mini dehumidifiers measures 5.3 inches long, 6.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall.

On the top, there is a removable grill so you can easily clean it.

The HomeLabs Small Space Dehumidifier is the perfect option for small trailers, vans or cars that just need a little help keeping the moisture away. For the size and the small energy use, I would rate this an 8/10 in the under 200 square feet dehumidifier category. It does draw a lot of moisture from the air for its size and if you stay under the 150 square feet it’s rated for you will definitely feel a difference in the air when running the Homelabs dehumidifier.

PROS

  • Very Small & Portable
  • Draws Very Little Power
  • Quiet
  • Removable Grill For Cleaning
  • Automatic Shut Off

Pro Breeze Mini Dehumidifier

Pro Breeze Electric Mini Dehumidifier, 2200 Cubic Feet (250 sq ft), Compact and Portable for High Humidity in Home, Kitchen, Bedroom, Basement, Caravan, Office, Garage

The Pro Breeze mini dehumidifier is an excellent option for large RVs, travel trailers, 5th-wheels, and buses. It is rated the highest on the list per square feet at 250, and it’s still very portable measuring only 6.6 inches long, 9 inches wide and 12.7 inches tall.

It can draw up to 18 oz of water out of the air per day which is the second highest amount on this list. But with all that fan power it also draws the most energy at 72 watts.

The water tank holds 52 oz and there is an automatic shut off feature when it’s full and it also lights up to alert you. Much like the other dehumidifiers on this list, the Pro Breeze uses thermoelectric cooling (Peltier) to operate and uses no compressor. That keeps the watt usage down and also keeps the unit running quietly.

Pro Breeze Electric Mini Dehumidifier, 2200 Cubic Feet (250 sq ft), Compact and Portable for High Humidity in Home, Kitchen, Bedroom, Basement, Caravan, Office, Garage

The optimal running temperature is 59-86F. Do not use the RV dehumidifier below 41F.

The Pro Breeze Mini Dehumidifier is the perfect option for large RV owners who won’t have to worry about electricity. If you live somewhere with high humidity a dehumidifier this powerful is an absolute necessity. I would rate this a 7/10 for use in RVs because it sucks a lot of moisture out of the air. The only downside is it uses a lot of power. If you leave this on 24/7 you are going to see it in your electrical bill. But if you have enough solar power to run an RV dehumidifier of this size then it’s going to be one of the best options on the list.

PROS

  • Very Powerful
  • Very Small & Portable
  • Automatic Shut Off
  • Quiet

Afloia Portable Dehumidifier

Afloia Electric Home Dehumidifier, Portable Dehumidifier for Home Bedroom 700ml (24fl.oz) Capacity up to (215 sq ft)

The Afloia portable dehumidifier is the biggest on this list but surprisingly not the most powerful. It’s still very small compared to standard dehumidifiers and is only 4.3 inches long, 6.3 inches wide and 14 inches tall.

It has a water tank holds 24 oz of water and there is an automatic shut off with an indicator light that illuminates when it is full. It can draw up to 10 oz of water from the air a day and uses the quiet thermoelectric Peltier technology.

Although this RV dehumidifier is taller than the others the height gives it an advantage because it works in rooms up to 215 square feet and still only draws 25 watts of power which is incredible for how many square feet it’s rated to work in.

The optimal running temperatures are from 59-86F.

The Afloia Portable Dehumidifier is the perfect option for large RVs that have a good spot to put a tall dehumidifier that will quietly run in the corner. It can cover a lot of square footage and uses hardly any power so it’s going to be perfect for solar set ups and people who want to save money on electricity.  Combining the low power usage with the high square footage rating I would give this an 8/10 rating for use in RVs.

PROS

  • Large Square Footage Coverage
  • Draws Very Little Power
  • Quiet
  • Automatic Shut Off

Hauture Mini Dehumidifier

2020 Electric Mini Dehumidifier, 1500Cubic Feet (170 sq ft) Portable and Compact 600ml( 20 oz) Capacity Quiet Small Dehumidifier for Basement, Home, Bedroom, Bathroom, Gunsafe, RV, Garage, Caravan

The Hauture mini dehumidifier is another smaller unit that works best in areas up to 170 square feet. It’s very compact and is only 5.7 inches long, 5.7 inches wide and 8.9 inches tall. It’s perfect for small trailers and vans that are in areas with high humidity.

The water tank can hold 20 oz and has an automatic shut off. There’s a large LED light on the top that shines green when it is running and will flash orange when the water tank is full. Even though it’s small in size the Hauture can draw up to 10 oz of water from the air a day.

It uses Thermoelectric Peltier cooling which is very quiet and draws only 23 watts when running.

Even though it’s a very small unit they still added a defrosting function so this small dehumidifier can still run in temperatures as low as 41F.

2020 Electric Mini Dehumidifier, 1500Cubic Feet (170 sq ft) Portable and Compact 600ml( 20 oz) Capacity Quiet Small Dehumidifier for Basement, Home, Bedroom, Bathroom, Gunsafe, RV, Garage, Caravan

The Hauture Mini Dehumidifier is one of the best mini dehumidifiers you can buy for small spaces. It’s one of the smallest on this list and still has the power to draw up to 10 oz of water from the air like the larger RV dehumidifiers on this list. Because of the very low power usage combined with the small body and the ability to take a lot of water from the air I would rate this a 10/10 in the under 200 square feet category.

Sure it’s mostly only good for small trailers and vans but it’s going to be the best choice if you need to save space.

PROS

  • Very Small & Portable
  • Automatic Shut Off
  • Uses Very Little Power
  • Draws A Lot Of Water From Air For Its Size

The Hysure compact dehumidifier is a lot like the Afloia Portable Dehumidifier but it’s 3.5 inches shorter, the total measurments are 4.2 inches long, 6.4 inches wide and 10.5 tall. Even though it’s short it can still be used in space up to 215 square feet.

The water tank can hold 24 oz and the small dehumidifier will shut off automatically when the tank is full. It can draw up to 10 oz of water from the air daily and uses only 24 watts.

Like all the dehumidifiers on this list, the Hysure is very quiet and uses compressor free Peltier technology.

The Hysure Compact Dehumidifier is another great portable option with the ability to work in larger areas. It’s perfect for RVs, large travel trailers, 5th-wheels, and buses. It’s also good for those with limited power resources. Overall I would give this RV dehumidifier a 9/10 rating.

PROS

  • Small & Portable
  • High Square Footage Coverage
  • Low Energy Usage
  • Automatic Shut Off

Tenergy Sorbi Air Dehumidifier

Tenergy Sorbi 1000ml Air Dehumidifier w/Air Purifying Function, True HEPA Filter, Auto Shutoff, Touch Control Adjustable Air Speed, Ultra-Quiet Allergies Eliminator, Ideal for Closets and Bathrooms

Check Price at Amazon

The Tenergy Sorbi is the dehumidifier I use in my travel trailer and so far I’ve been nothing but impressed. The reason we got this one instead of a more affordable model was the air purifying function the Sorbi has. None of the other dehumidifiers on this list have that option and we felt it would be useful because there can be a lot of smog in the air when camping outside of cities. Trailers are more open than houses and it’s easier for impurities to enter.

Aside from the purifying capabilities, the Tenergy has a 1 liter or 34 oz water tank and an automatic shut off with an LED indicator for when the tank gets full. Even with the large tank, the Sorbi is only 8.5 inches long, 7.7 inches wide and 12.4 inches tall, which is still very portable and small especially considering the power this unit has.

It can draw more water from the air than any of the other RV dehumidifiers on this list. It’s a whopping 25 oz daily and can cover an area as large as 200 square feet, which is perfect for large RVs, 5th-wheels, and travel trailers.

Tenergy Sorbi 1000ml Air Dehumidifier w/Air Purifying Function, True HEPA Filter, Auto Shutoff, Touch Control Adjustable Air Speed, Ultra-Quiet Allergies Eliminator, Ideal for Closets and Bathrooms

You can run the air purifying mode at the same time as the dehumidifier mode or on its own. It works by using a HEPA filter to capture 99.7% of the microparticles in the air which includes things like pollen, dust, and dander. If you have trouble with allergies while camping then this will help make the inside of your RV or trailer allergen-free zone.

It’s also surprisingly quiet even with the fan having to work to run air through a filter. Even with it on the high setting, the noise level is minimal and it’s easy to sleep while it’s running. There is a high and a low setting and it can use up to 45 watts on the highest setting. It’s nice to have both options because you can have it on low all day and then turn it up to suck out the extra moisture in the mornings.

The Tenergy Sorbi Air Dehumidifier is a great investment if you want a multipurpose dehumidifier that will capture all the extra moisture in the air, freshen your RV, and clean the air at the same time. It’s the most powerful dehumidifier on the list and one of the smallest in size as well. Maybe I’m a little biased because I own this dehumidifier but putting all the stats together and using my personal experience with this product I give it a 10/10 for RV use.

PROS

  • Purifies Air With HEPA Filter
  • Can Draw Up To 25 oz Of Water Daily
  • High & Low Setting
  • Small & Portable
  • Fairly Low Energy Use
  • Automatic Shut Off

My Recommendation For Best RV Dehumidifier

RVs and trailers don’t always have a lot of space and a dehumidifier may seem like just another thing to fill the closet but it is so important to keep the humidity down to stop mold damage. That’s why the Tenergy is my choice for the best RV dehumidifier because although it is small it’s very powerful and can draw twice as much water from the air in a day as the others.

You also get multifunction of the air purifying HEPA filter that makes the air in your RV cleaner and safer, especially when camping by busy roads and large cities.  And it doesn’t use very much power to boot.

All-in-all you get the most for your money with the Tenergy. It’s a solid unit that I’ve used for years and it’s still going strong.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Dehumidifiers

Where to place a dehumidifier in an RV?

You want to place your dehumidifier in a spot with good air flow at least 6 inches from the wall. A bedroom is a common place for mold to grow because it is a small area that builds up moisture when you sleep at night.

Can a dehumidifier help asthma?

A small dehumidifier in your RV can help with asthma but if you want to really help your asthma and allergies make sure you get one with an air purifier. It will run the air through a filter and remove particles, dust, and pollen.

The Tenergy Sorbi Air Dehumidifier uses a true HEPA filter that removes 99.7% of the microparticles in the air. It’s perfect for an RV or travel trailer as they can get dusty and filled with pollen.

What do I do when a dehumidifier ices up?

Dehumidifiers don’t work very well in low temperatures below 41F. If you run one when it’s too cold outside ice can start to build up inside of it. If it ices up, turn off the dehumidifier and let it thaw before turning it back on.

How do dehumidifiers work?

Small RV dehumidifiers use thermoelectric cooling which cools the inside of the unit. When air passes through it the moisture in the air collects on the cold coils and is then transferred to a water holding tank. Because the coils have to be colder than the air being passed through to work properly it’s not worth it to run one when it’s under 41F.

When do I need to use a dehumidifier in an RV?

Mold grows the fastest when it’s over 55% humidity and 70F. To stay comfortable most people keep the temperature inside their RV at least 70F, so there’s almost always a chance for mold to be growing.

It’s especially important to keep a dehumidifier going when it’s warm and moist outside. Places by the ocean or near water can be especially humid when it’s hot and not using a dehumidifier in your trailer could end up causing irreversible damage to the walls, ceiling, subfloor, and even your mattress.

Will a dehumidifier help with condensation?

If you’ve ever been camping in an RV or travel trailer you have most likely experienced condensation on the windows. RV dehumidifiers are a great way to minimize the condensation that happens but it may not get rid of it especially if it’s humid outside. If I’m camping in an extra humid area I will wipe the condensation off the windows while running the dehumidifier in the morning to soak up some of the moisture inside.

Can a dehumidifier be run 24/7?

High-quality dehumidifiers are made to be run 24/7 and it shouldn’t be a problem. That being said make sure you buy a quality product you trust before leaving it on overnight or unattended. In an RV it can be especially important to make sure your dehumidifier is running safely.

Can a dehumidifier make you sick or uncomfortable?

Humans are the most comfortable at 30-50% humidity. While it’s best to keep the humidity low in an RV or travel trailer you don’t need to worry about keeping it below 30%. So long as it’s below 50% most of the time and the walls are not damp your trailer should stay mold free and you can be comfortable in your RV or trailer.

Can a small dehumidifier stop my clothes from getting damp in my RV’s closets?

Damp clothes are a common problem in RVs and there are a few ways you can stop it from happening. For more information check out this post here.

Do I need to run the dehumidifier while my RV AC is on?

An AC also acts as a dehumidifier and you can sometimes use just the AC to control the humidity in your RV or travel trailer. For more information on that check out this post here.
