What Is A 12 Volt Battery DC USB Hub?

One of the simplest ways to use a 12 volt battery as an alternative power source is to use a DC USB hub.

Most of our electronics can be charged and powered using USB ports that are directly connected to a 12 or 24 volt battery.

A DC USB Hub, also called a battery socket outlet, is a box with different ports on it you can plug into.

It connects directly to the battery, and no heavy inverter is required.

In this review, I’m going to go over the features of the Timeusb DC battery socket outlet.

I’ve been testing it at home and in my RV for a few weeks now. So far, it’s been really useful, especially for RV living.

Timeusb DC USB Hub Testing

Since this is a DC port that’s connected to a 12 or 24 volt battery, it doesn’t need an inverter inside to convert it to AC power.

It’s really a pretty simple device, but it’s well built and has a lot of useful features.

Cigarette Socket (12 Volt Outlet)

The 12 volt socket that’s built into the hub did a good job powering a portable fridge. It usually draws around 500 watts in a 24-hour period, so it was a good way to test the 12 volt ports reliability.

It worked great, and even though I wish it was a 20 amp socket instead of a 10 amp socket; it’s good quality and holds tightly onto 12 volt plugs.

It also has a cover that fits snugly and keeps the inside of the socket clean.

There are plenty of USB ports on the Timeusb DC battery socket outlet to charge small and large electronics.

USB Ports

Much like the 12 volt socket and DC ports, the USB ports feel high quality and they don’t wiggle at all when cables are plugged into them.

They worked like they should and I could charge my laptop, phone and speaker all at the same time.

I think quality is one of the most important thing with USB ports because cheap ones can wear out so quickly. These ports seem like they’ll last for a long time.

Extension Cable

The extension cable is heavy and definitely thick enough for the 20 amp rating and 15 foot length.

It comes with battery terminal eyelets and an Anderson Connector already attached. You can hook it up to the battery right out of the box.

One thing to note is that the cable is only rated for 20 amps even though the Timeusb DC battery socket outlet is rated for 40 amps.

The hub can handle 40 amps, but the included extension cable cannot. You need to get a thicker cable if you need a higher 40 amp current.

For a 40 amp 15 foot extension cable, Timeusb recommends using 8 AWG wire.

The included Anderson connector is rated for 50 amps, so you can connect the thicker 40 amp rated wire to that.

There’s an Anderson connector output next to the input on the bottom of the hub.

You can use that to power a 12 volt appliance that uses lots of electricity or even connect another Timeusb DC USB hub.

The Timeusb uses this type of 50 amp Anderson Connector (click to view on Amazon) if you need more.

Wall Mount

There’s a sliding wall mount on the back of the hub. 4 screws are included with purchase and the slide tab is really easy to mount to a wall.

The hub securely clicks into place, but it’s still easy to release.

I moved the wall mount around a few times for testing and the plastic parts held up and weren’t damaged, even after a lot of use.

On/Off Button

The on/off button is really nice because you can cut power to the hub without having to go to the battery or disconnect the Anderson connector.

It has a blue LED light that shines when it’s getting power, so it’s easy so see when it’s on.

It’s very easy to use and feels high quality as well.

Voltage Meter & Battery Level Display

The voltage meter is accurate most of the time.

When there’s a high power draw, the output voltage of the battery will naturally drop a little. The meter might show a lower voltage than what the battery is actually at when there’s no draw.

The battery level display works, but the main issue with the bar style of measurement is it’s hard to tell exactly what the percentage is.

It’s a good indicator though, and it did show the lithium battery I was using needed to be charged at the right time.

The wall mount and long extension cable make it so you can put the Timeusb 12 volt USB hub almost anywhere.

Timeusb DC USB Hub Review

I’ve never really seen anything like this in the RV, camping, or automotive world. Most USB hubs like this are connected to a 12 volt plug, not to battery eyelets.

I like how it simply connects directly to a battery so you can use it anywhere a battery can be taken.

The fact that it uses high quality 50 amp Anderson Connectors and has a high 40 amp rating is really unusual and a big pro for this product.

These kinds of things are almost always made with small wires and have a very low amperage rating.

I know I keep talking about how all the ports and even the on/off button feel high quality, but they really do, and that’s not what I was expecting.

Most of the time, DC USB adapters come with poorly built ports that hardly hold cables and don’t give a solid connection. But that’s not the case with this Timeusb DC battery socket outlet.

I can see why it’s not exactly a budget friendly usb adapter. If you want a dependable way to charge and power electronics and 12 volt appliances, it’s really a fantastic option.

Of course, it works best with a good 12 or 24 volt power source. If you connect it to the starter battery in your car, make sure you don’t drain the battery with it.

Car batteries don’t have a lot of storage, they are mostly made for a quick burst of energy, unlike deep cycle batteries that are made for lower power output but have a high storage capacity.

If you turn on the engine while you’re using the Timeusb hub, you don’t have to worry about draining the battery.

But if the car is turned off, make sure the battery doesn’t go below 12.1 volts.

I wasn’t so sure about this 12 volt gadget when we first heard about it, but now I think it’s one of the coolest DC power adapters I’ve ever used.

Normally we use the USB ports on portable power stations to keep our electronics charged, but it’s not always convenient to have a large power station sitting right next to you.

The Timeusb has a small profile and if you hide the cables, it’s almost like a regular outlet on a wall.

You can have it permanently connected to your RV battery and never have to worry about not having enough ports to charge everyone’s phones.

I would recommend this to anyone, especially RVers and van lifers who camp off-grid.

Like

  • High Quality USB Ports
  • 12 Volt Cigarette Socket
  • 2 DC Ports
  • Lots of USB Ports (Including USB-C)
  • On/Off Button with LED Light Indicator
  • Voltage Meter
  • Battery Level Meter
  • Heavy Duty 15 Foot Extension Cable
  • Extra 50 Amp Anderson Connector
  • Easy to Understand Manual
  • Lightweight
  • Wall Mount
  • Doesn’t Need An Inverter

Dislike

  • Only 10 Amp Rated Cigarette Socket – Since the amp rating of the entire unit is so high, I would like to see a more heavy duty 12 volt outlet for powering bigger 12 volt appliances. You can always use the Anderson Connector output, but a 20 amp 12 volt outlet would nice to have as well.
