Who Is an Anemometer For?
Handheld digital anemometers like the TopTes TS-301 (click to view on Amazon) are used to measure wind speed, temperature, and humidity.
These types of tools are useful for activities where the wind can be a factor.
Golf, disc golf, watersports (paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing), wind sports (drone flying, hang gliding), shooting, archery, and fishing are just a few outdoor hobbies and activities where knowing the wind speed can be helpful.

I spend a lot of time outdoors and RV camping. There have been a lot of times during windstorms in the desert that I’ve wanted to know the speed of the wind outside.

TopTes Digital Handheld Wind Meter Testing
Camping
We took the TopTes anemometer along with us on our latest camping trip.
Late winter in the desert means lots of wind, which isn’t fantastic when you’re going to be sleeping in a tent.
We used the wind meter to figure out what direction the wind was blowing from and to find the spot that would give our tent the most shelter.
The thing I liked the most about the TopTes while camping was being able to check the temperature and humidity.
Our only weather station is inside the RV, so when we go tent camping we never really know how cold it gets.
There’s not always a lot of space for camping gear. A tool like the TopTes wind meter that can be used for more than one thing is really nice to have.

Disc Golf
We always check out the local disc golf course in every town we visit.
While we aren’t professionals, we have a decent selection of discs for different distances and wind conditions.
Using the TopTes anemometer, we got a good idea of what discs were best for a certain wind speeds. The more we use a wind meter, the better our disc selection will be.

Heaters
The first chance I got to test the TopTes wind meter was when I was testing a diesel heater I was installing in my RV.
I wanted to measure the velocity of the hot air coming out of the vent I used for installation.

The TopTes measured the speed to be around 10 mil/h. Which is pretty good for a small heater.
The temperature coming out of the heater was well over the 140°F range, and the thermometer reflected that.
TopTes Anemometer Review
I think wind meters have more uses than people might think, and the TopTes anemometer is a fantastic choice for a reliable portable option.
It has lots of different wind speed measurements, a thermometer, and a humidity sensor.
As far as I can tell, it’s pretty accurate and I like bringing it along with me whenever I go outside.
It’s so portable and built well enough that I think it will last for a long time.
The protective cage over the fan and cloth bag that comes with it protects the fan part of the sensor enough that I can throw it in my backpack and not worry about it getting damaged.
Overall, this is a great anemometer and an excellent option for anyone who might need or want to know wind speeds.

What I Don’t Like
- No start/end for the minimum on the MIN/MAX. When the fan stops moving, the MAX value is still displayed, but the minimum goes down to zero.
- Thermometer takes a few minutes to get an accurate temperature reading.
