If you’re shopping for a weight distribution hitch for your camper or any kind of bumper pull trailer, I want to say: Get ready for a smoother ride with a safer towing!

A weight distribution hitch with sway control will not only improve the steering and stopping of your vehicle and trailer but also correct any trailer sway that you might have experienced on the road.

To me, it’s a product for the safety of myself and my passengers more than anything else.

Before we review weight distribution hitches with sway control, we need to know what it is and how it works.

If you aren’t sure if you need one, you can follow this simple rule. If the trailer weight is more than 50 percent of your tow vehicle’s weight, get a weight distribution hitch to distribute the weight of the load and prevent sway.

In this review, I’ll go through some of the different trailer hitch options that have both weight distribution and sway control. Some are better than others but I wanted to make sure to review every style to fit every kind of trailer and tow vehicle.

If you’re looking for one of the easiest, most affordable ways to distribute the weight of your cargo or travel trailer and have sway control, the Husky weight distribution hitch will be a good way to go.

It’s not only good at distributing weight, but it comes with an anti-sway bar so you can travel down the highway towing a heavy trailer and not have to worry about crosswinds from wind and other vehicles on the road.

The tongue weight range on this model is 801-1,200 pounds and for trailers weighing under 12,000 pounds.

The ball for the trailer receiver is 2 5/16 inches and comes pre-assembled. The height adjustment is 8 inches, and the shank length is 10 inches.

A properly packed bumper pull trailer needs to have at least 10% but no more than 15% of the weight of the entire trailer on the tongue. For the most trailer sway reduction, it’s recommended to get the tongue weight to 15%.

That means the most your trailer can weigh will be between 8,000-12,000 lbs, an 8,000 lbs trailer packed with 15% tongue weight will give you the best results for reducing trailer sway.

The chain style weight distribution hitches have to have a sway bar installed in order to properly control sway.

The sway bar is bolted in at the front of the A-frame near the ball hitch receiver, you will have to drill holes in the frame to install it.

It connects from the trailer to the hitch, it uses a sort of brake system to put resistance on the trailer, this helps it to keep it centered behind the tow vehicle which reduces sway.

Sway bars can get damaged in certain reversing situations, it’s recommended to remove the sway bar before backing your trailer. It’s easy to do and the weight distribution hitch can remain attached.

If you have a trailer weighing less than 12,000 pounds, this will make a huge difference in terms of load distribution and sway control on the road.

This is another great affordable option with different weight ratings. Depending on your tongue weight, you can choose between four sizes. 600, 800, 1,000, and 1,200 lbs.

Most of the gross trailer weight ratings are based on having the minimum 10% tongue weight, for instance, this 1,000 lbs version is advertised to be able to take a gross trailer weight of 10,000 lbs.

10% tongue weight is great but I would suggest calculating for a 15% tongue weight to reduce trailer sway even more.

So what does it mean that the sway control is independent?

I have gone more into depth in the FAQ down below about this, but in short, it means that the sway control bar is installed and operated independently of the weight distribution hitch on your camper.

It’s bolted to the trailer frame and the distributing system and will use a telescoping arm and friction pads to stop sway once it has begun, which makes it different from a 2 or 4-Point system that delivers more permanent sway control.

It’s the same style of trailer sway control as the Husky reviewed above.

Something to note when you’re using a sway control bar is that you should avoid backing up with it attached as it can damage the system.

And out of all models, this is the kind that requires the most installation since you will have to drill into the trailer frame to install the sway control.

The Fastway 10K is the weight distribution hitch that I own and have used with our 32-foot travel trailer since we started full-timing.

It came with the purchase of the travel trailer and so far it’s kept the trailer from swaying out of control and been able to properly distribute the weight.

It’s a 2-Point sway control hitch with round bars. The 2-Point means that there won’t be any add-on sway control that you must install independently. This makes it easier to set up and adjust.

The spring bars are loaded onto steel tabs that stick out on either side of the trailer’s tongue. The weight of the trailer is pushing down on the bars and the tabs creating friction which in turn is excellent sway control.

It does the job of a sway control bar on two sides instead of one and at better angles.

You can do sharp turns and backing maneuvers without having to unhook anything.

The spring bars are heavy to lift onto the tabs and I recommend getting a special handle that is made to push the bars onto the tabs. Equal-i-zer (click to view on Amazon) makes an excellent version of this that I use every time I hitch up my travel trailer.

Depending on how much your travel trailer weighs and the tongue weight, you have several weight ratings to choose from. Note that smaller systems do not come with the hitch ball included.

Unlike the chain style of weight equalizer reviewed above, you won’t have to drill any holes to install the Fastway. The steel tabs just bolt on around the frame.

What I especially like with the Fastway weight distribution hitch is how easy it’s to set up on the trailer when it’s time to hit the road. I also like that you can back with this hitch without hurting anything.

It has improved the towing of our trailer and the sway control makes us feel solid on the road.

I haven’t found any reason to upgrade from this hitch and will use it for as long as it lasts.

The Andersen No Sway weight distribution hitch showed up on the market a few years ago and it’s starting to gain popularity in the travel and bumper pull trailer world.

It’s unlike any other weight distribution with sway control hitch on the market today and there are a lot of things that make it one of the best options for travel trailer owners.

The first and possibly the best thing is it’s almost half the weight of the other styles of weight distribution hitches.

This will not only save you pounds when calculating your gross combined weight but be more friendly to handle and install. 

Second, the installation is an easy process, and once everything is set up it’s easy to unhitch.

Andersen Hitches has made some excellent videos (click here to go to video) you can follow along with and there is no drilling into the frame.

Once you’ve got it installed hitching and unhitching is a breeze. There are no heavy spring bars to lift, all you need is a socket wrench to turn the screw pins into position and you are good to go.

Third, a small thing I have noticed that might matter to some is that this solution is much quieter than other weight distribution systems.

Standard weight distribution hitches use friction to reduce trailer sway and its noisy. Sway bars squeak and the spring bars of 2 and 4 point systems scrape against the steel tabs when you are turning. 

Finally, this weight distribution hitch is a universal fit, which means you can use it on more than just a travel trailer.

The frame brackets can fit 3-6 inch frames. Also, the 2 5/16″ ball is included with purchase and there are 4″ to 8″ drop-rise options available. You can also turn sharp and back your trailer without having to unhook it.

This version of the Andersen No Sway hitch is rated for trailers up to 10,000 lbs with a 1,000 maximum tongue weight. That’s if you load your trailer with a 10% tongue weight.

There is a more heavy-duty version (click to view on Amazon) made for up to 16,000 lbs trailers and a max tongue weight of 1,600 lbs. If you have a heavy travel trailer I would suggest getting this version.

Andersen Hitches has done an impressive job with innovating the world of travel trailer and bumper pull trailer hitches. I’ve seen Andersen No Sway Weight Distribution Hitch on a lot of trailers lately and I can see why.

Some have expressed to me their worry that the springs will wear out over time. No problem, Andersen Hitches sells replacement springs and parts.

The last product in today’s review is from Equal-i-zer. This is a popular system that I have seen a lot of RV dealerships sell, and I understand why.

It’s a 4-Point trailer sway control kit that comes in different sizes depending on your weight capacity.

It uses spring bars to distribute weight amongst all axles and is one of the best styles to reduce sway.

I like this model because once you have installed the brackets on your trailer, it’s a quick process to set up the spring bars.

You will still want to use a handle to help you lift the bars onto the steel tabs as they are very heavy. Equal-i-zer (click to view on Amazon) makes its own and it’s a must-have for weight distribution hitches like these.

Much like the Fastway 2-Point equalizer hitch, the Equal-i-zer uses steel arms that rest on steel tabs that stick out on either side of the trailer tongue.

The friction for sway control is created by the weight of the trailers resting on the steel tabs.

Unlike the 2-point the 4-point weight distribution hitch is better at sway control because there is also friction on the base of the hitch under the ball.

The style of weight distribution is two steel arms that are lifted onto steel tabs that are bolted around the A-frame (tongue) of the trailer.

The sway control is achieved by the friction created from the arms pressing against the tabs like many weight distribution hitches but there is another factor Curt has added for even more sway control.

No matter what size your travel trailer is, weight distribution hitches with sway control are highly recommended. If you have a large travel trailer it’s probably even required by law.

The benefits of an equalizer hitch make it worth it when you start driving down the road. It’s not only better for towing but it’s also better for your tow vehicle because it’s distributing the weight more evenly on the axles and not loading down the rear as much.

Sway control is also another great thing to have when towing any size of bumper pull trailer. It may not seem like a necessity on a smaller single axle travel trailer but once the wind starts to blow, as it often does, you will really notice the difference.

There are a few different kinds of weight distribution hitches with sway control in this review. I prefer the spring bar style over the chain ones because of the superior sway control and the ability to reverse without removing parts but the end decision is up to you.

What I Use – Fastway 10K Weight Distribution Hitch With Sway Control

The Fastway is a 2 point weight distribution hitch that incorporates sway control into the equalizer part. It uses the steel tabs and spring bar arms to both distribute weight and also create friction for sway control.

The 4-point equalizer hitches are very similar and potentially better at sway control but for my travel trailer, the Fastway works well.

It can be noisy when turning and it does take some lifting to get the arms installed but after years of use, it’s still going strong and keeping me and my travel trailer safe on the road.

It’s genius in design and weighs a lot less than every equalizer hitch in this review.

I like how easy it is to just tighten the chains to distribute the weight and how the dual cams create resistance for high sway control.

It’s quiet too which is nice.

It is one of the more premium options in this review but if you camp a lot or tow a bumper pull trailer often it’s going to be one of the best choices not only because of the design but the easy install and quick set up.

The 4 point system is simple in design but it really makes a huge difference with you’re towing in windy conditions or on bumpy roads.

No matter what size of bumper pull trailer or travel trailer you have the Equalizer will be one of the safest options and it’s not hard to install.

What does weight distributing do?

A weight distribution system will combat problems that often occur with standard hitch systems by using spring bars that lift via chains or steel tabs.

The spring bars will help distribute the weight to all axles. A standard hitch often pushes down the rear of your tow vehicle resulting in the trailer leaning forward.

This can make it harder to steer, stop, and also increase trailer sway. You might notice that you see less of the road directly in front of you as your tow vehicle might be facing upward.

What is the difference between weight distribution and sway control?

While weight distribution takes care of distributing the weight between your tow vehicle and trailer, sway control helps reduce the sway caused by winds, a poorly loaded trailer, or inadequate spring bar tension in a weight distribution system.

Most weight distribution systems sold today come with built-in sway control. This is often done through a 2-point or 4-point sway control that essentially forces your trailer to remain in line during towing.

The downward force of the spring bars used in them creates frictional resistance to the brackets installed on both sides of the trailer frame.

During normal towing, this resistance is hard to overcome but you can still turn with your trailer. This kind of sway control works to prevent sway altogether, unlike a system that reduces sway only when it occurs.

If your weight distribution hitch doesn’t have a built-in sway control, an independent friction sway control bar can be installed.

These are connected to both the trailer frame and the distribution hitch and uses tension to keep the trailer in line. They feature telescoping arms and friction pads to stop sway once it has begun.

Note that while backing up, it’s recommended to remove the sway control bar if you have an independent friction bar to ease reversing and prevent damage to the sway control. This does not apply to a 2-point or a 4-point system.

There is also a sway control system called dual-cam sway control which uses sliding devices called cams to suspend the spring bars. They self-adjust and self-center to hold trailers steady during crosswinds.

What is the difference between a 2-point and 4-point sway control system?

With 2-point sway control, you will usually only see sway control at the end of the spring bars on the trailer side.

A 4-point sway control will have the same basic parts as a 2-point, but it will also have sway control via springs where the spring bars mount on the ball hitch side.

What are the components of a weight distribution system?

There are five main components in most weight distribution systems:

  1. Trailer Hitch – The receiver on your tow vehicle
  2. Shank – The piece that slides into your trailer hitch. The shank also provides an attachment point for the head assembly of the weight distribution hitch and allows you to adjust the height your trailer sits at.
  3. Head Assembly – Provides mounting points for the hitch ball and the spring bars. Attached to the channel or bolt holes along the shank.
  4. Spring Bars – Attached to the head assembly, can be round or trunnion types of spring bars. Transfers load pushing your tow vehicle down to the axles on both your tow vehicle and trailer.

You will run into GTW and TW. These are Gross Trailer Weight and Tongue Weight. The Gross Trailer Weight is how much the trailer weighs going down the road on the way to the campground. This can be measured on a vehicle scale.

The Tongue Weight is the weight your trailer puts on the hitch of your tow vehicle plus the weight of cargo placed behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The Trailer Tongue Weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of GTW.

When picking a weight distribution hitch with sway control you want to choose one that is rated the closest to your actual Tongue weight.

You don’t want to get one rated too high or too low. A system with a Tongue weight rated too high for your setup will create a stiff ride (bouncy), while one too low will be unable to distribute the weight properly rendering it useless.

Loading your trailer so the tongue is 15% of the weight of the trailer is the recommended percentage to get the best trailer sway reduction results.
